Before The Hollowing, Arcana was the shared birthright of all people across Alunira. It flowed freely through the world, a force of pure potential drawn from the Arcane Plane. No one needed permission or training to access Arcana, it was as natural as breathing, woven into daily life, shaping magic, craftsmanship, and culture alike.
But after The Hollowing severed the world’s connection to the Arcane Plane, Arcana became fragmented and elusive. Now, it can only be accessed through specific Archetypes. Sacred paths that bind a person’s soul to one aspect of Arcana, while closing off all others. Gaining this power is no longer a birthright, but a privilege granted by one’s kingdom through its Arcane Gate. Each Gate serves as both conduit and barrier, controlling who may wield Arcana, and how. This transformation has reshaped not only magic, but the very fabric of Alunira’s cultures and power structures.
Archetypes are the sacred paths that define how individuals in Alunira can access Arcana in the wake of The Hollowing. Each Archetype represents a specific facet of magic or martial tradition, binding a person’s soul to a single aspect of Arcana while closing off all others. Once chosen, an Archetype shapes not only a character’s abilities and role in battle, but also their place in society, their relationship to the divine, and the opportunities or limitations they face. Archetypes are granted through a kingdom’s Arcane Gate, marking those who bear them as both gifted and bound, trusted with power, but forever tied to the responsibilities and expectations that come with it.

The Hollowing was the great magical catastrophe that shattered the bond between Alunira and the Arcane Plane. Once, Arcana flowed freely, a birthright of every living being. But during The Hollowing, that connection was violently severed. To this day no one knows why or how it happened. In an instant, the flow of Arcana collapsed, leaving the world spiritually and magically hollow. Where Arcana had once been as natural as breath, it became fractured, elusive, and guarded.

The Hollowing scarred both land and soul. Ancient cities crumbled as the Arcane structures that sustained them failed. The kingdom of Concordia fell, leaving behind ruined monuments and dead zones where magic once thrived. Storm-wracked seas, blighted fields, and haunted ruins stand as grim reminders of the event. In the aftermath, kingdoms like Maebryl constructed the Arcane Gates, not as bridges for all, but as barriers and conduits, controlling who may touch Arcana and how.

The Hollowing transformed Alunira’s cultures, politics, and very identity. Arcana, once the common bond of all peoples, became a privilege, granted through Archetypes, administered by kings, and hoarded by factions. Kingdoms rose and fell based on their control of Arcane Gates, and entire cultures reshaped themselves around what was lost or preserved. The Hollowing lingers not just in the broken land, but in the fears, ambitions, and hopes of those who inherited its scars.
